(Mis)priced Gas

This rant comes from the math teacher within me...
Have you ever noticed that gas prices are written so poorly? Aside from the fact that they are super inflated, think about how they are written. If you've graduated from middle school, you should know your decimal places and value system. So who's the genius who started writing gas prices as $2.90 9/10. Thats combining fractions with decimals, which is a big no-no. Really though, if they really wanted to be mathematically correct, they would write it as $2.909-- which as a mixed fraction would look more like 2 909/1000. Call me crazy, but how come nobody has ever questioned this before?
